To think all these wonderful dogs would be running loose and starving if not for Kayenta Township's commitment to its community animals! The Animal Care Center is a bright spot in the dismal stray animal scene on the Navajo Nation. Kudos to Dr. Begaye and Kayenta for tackling this problem head-on with clarity, commitment and compassion. The McBrides at Monument Valley High School deserve some credit too, for establishing the amazing new ag science facility with its state-of-the-art veterinary clinic.

I was looking forward to listening to "Rez Dog Chronicles" when I first heard that it was going to be broadcast on NAC, a show I listen to frequently. I thought, "Finally someone is going to address this problem!" But as I listened, I grew increasingly upset. There was no attempt to educate people about the plight of these dogs who, more often than not, have no shelter from the heat or cold, are not spayed or neutered or vaccinated, are usually flea and tick infested and starving. The host, whose name I did not get, seemed oblivious to the true conditions of these dogs' lives. She, and most of the callers, attempted to romanticize a tragic situation. They called the neglect that these dogs suffer, "freedom." They seemed to take it for granted that some of the dogs are three-legged without acknowledging that it was because they'd been shot. They seemed to think it was appropriate to turn a dog loose in the mountains when they couldn't keep him anymore.
Your show gives you the opportunity to educate people about the true conditions of these dogs' lives. You need a host who is knowledgeable about the situation and who has a plan to fix it. There are many veterinarians and dog rescue groups throughout the country that are dedicated to improving the lot of these dogs.

[...] The herpes virus, EVH-1, can cause respiratory neurological disease and death to horses. There is no cure, but symptoms can be treatable. According to a press release, symptoms of the virus include fever, decreased coordination, … organizers of events and check with states if they require additional health information and travel, health restrictions. “Use separate water, feed supplies and equipment along with keeping horses away from other horses,” a press release said. … … Read this article: Herpes warning for Navajo Nation – Kayenta Today [...]

I'm sure you are a proud people, but my question is how proud you are of your "clean up" efforts of the hungry dogs that entertain the patrons of the fast food establishments. One of the employees at one of those establishments said you "pick them all up befor the tourists get here". How you cleaned up that problem doesn't take a genius to figure out. How proud is Kayenta of that?
